Saltgrass Steak House is East End Seawall Gem

NEW EATS and Attractions!

By Marsha Wilson Rappaport

If you're coming in from H-Town for the island experience and hit the seawall – keep Driving East! Saltgrass Steak House, on the east end of the seawall,  is famous for announcing that it's "Texas to the Bone!". Most importantly, however for your family and friends, it provides choices for every member of the family. Steaks are King here, but you can also stay on your G-Town roll and enjoy fresh seafood with a Gulf view!

Appetizers- Texas Style

Saltgrass is totally Texas. The walls are adorned with Texas Flags, Texas Murals and Texan artifacts. In short, it's the perfect place to try a dish named "Range Rattlers". Trust me it doesn’t get any more Texan than giant fried jalapeño peppers, stuffed with jumbo shrimp and jack cheese. Young folks in your group will love their Chuck Wagon Cheese Fries, with featured melted Jack and Cheddar cheeses, bacon, sour cream and chives. Seafood lovers can start their meals with choices that include Crab Cakes, Avocado Crab Stack and more. Their Seafood Fondeaux is one of my personal favorites. It features, crawfish, shrimp and mushrooms, bathed in a rich cream sauce and served casserole style bubbling hot Romano and Jack cheeses. Veggie lovers will enjoy choices that include French Fried Onions, Mushrooms and buttermilk marinated fried Lemon Pepper Zucchini Spears.

Special Bonus: Saltgrass features a "Lone Star Starters Sampler". If it looks like your sunny beach day is turning into a menu battle with your family and friends Saltgrass has your back. There will nothing but smiles around the table with this menu item that features their famous BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Range Rattlers, Buffalo Tenders, French Fried Onions and Artichoke and Spinach Dip.

Tough Choices: Premium Steak or Seafood

Saltgrass Steak House is truly steak heaven. Choose a cut: Sirloin, Ribeye, New York Strip, Prime Rib, Porterhouse, T-Bone and of course their Signature Center-Cut Filet Mignon. Not only are the choices Certified Prime Angus, the staff at Saltgrass will cook it to perfection per YOUR instructions. I know from experience. I am a 'steak peasant' and the wonderful Saltgrass Chef will cook it medium well, slightly charred anyway.

BBQ Baby Back Ribs and Chicken Fried Steak are Saltgrass Legends. Take it from personal experience; there is no better way to celebrate a birthday.

However, there in the middle of summer, when I'm playing local tourist –I just had to have seafood. My choice on the day I visited was "Salmon Oscar".  The dish featured a fresh, generous North Atlantic Salmon strip, with perfectly charred, crispy edges that complement the fork flakey interior. The salmon is covered with  jumbo lump crabmeat in a savory, lemon butter sauce. Both the lemon butter and crabmeat were plentiful, ensuring that each bite of the salmon was juicy and flavorful. The salmon, crabmeat and sauce were all cleverly perched on several spears of lightly fried, lightly seasoned freshly Asparagus. It was tempting to order one of their wonderful shrimp dishes, but this dish was so good, I'm glad I ventured out of my comfort zone.

Saltgrass Steak House has a full bar and dropping in for generous frozen Margarita and a quick appetizer is certainly worth the stop. The dessert menu includes specials like luscious carrot and chocolate cakes.

Celebrity Sighting!

There is most assuredly, no way to talk about Saltgrass Steak House without mentioning Galveston's Hometown pride and joy: Tilman Fertitta. Fertitta, the sole owner, chairman and CEO of Fertitta Entertainment, Inc. is now the star of The Billion Dollar Buyer on CNBC.  Fertitta Entertainment, Inc. owns both the restaurant giant Landry’s and the Golden Nugget Casinos. It should noted that Fertitta provides over 60,000 jobs in the United States.

Saltgrass Steak House is part of a business empire with an estimated worth of $3.5 billion dollars. Landry’s owns and operates more than 50 different restaurant brands, including McCormick & Schmick’s, Chart House, Landry’s Seafood, Rainforest Cafe, Saltgrass Steak House, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Claim Jumper and many more award-winning concepts. Landry’s Signature Group of restaurants includes some of the world’s premier fine dining concepts, like Mastro’s Steakhouse and Ocean Club, Morton’s The Steakhouse, The Oceanaire, Vic & Anthony’s, Brenner’s Steakhouse, Grotto, La Griglia and Willie G’s.

Put Saltgrass on your list during a visit to Galveston.  The menu items for both lunch and dinner are far numerous to include in a meal review.  However, the wide variety will make your entire family or family group happy. And of course, if your luck holds, you might get an autograph from Tilman Fertitta - our famous Galvestonian!
